Community Outreach

Epiphany reaches out to the community at large.

Chaplaincy at Stanford
Episcopal Chaplaincy at Stanford Hospital which provides comfort and counsel to hundreds of patients and their families each year.

The mission of the chaplaincy is fourfold:
1 To act as the presence of the Episcopal Church in the setting of the Stanford Hospital.
2 To visit and offer support to every Episcopal patient that enters Stanford Episcopal Hospital.
3 To act as a resource for clergy in the Diocese of California and the Diocese of El Camino (as well as clergy in other areas).
4 To provide a training ground for seminary students (both deacon and priest candidates) as a field education site.

The Episcopal Chaplaincy has a strong history of serving the people of the Diocese of California and beyond. Our volunteers have the opportunity to be deeply immersed in a rewarding and fulfilling ministry and to work as part of a huge Interfaith Spiritual Care Department. Our volunteers are a diverse group—and represent the diversity and inclusivity of the Beloved Community values.

Second Saturday Quilts
The Second Saturday Quilters group is part of Epiphany’s Outreach Ministry, with a focus on supporting our Deacon, Hailey McKeefry Delmas’ ministry here at Epiphany and at Stanford Hospital, where she serves as the Episcopal Chaplain.  We enjoy making quilts that represent prayers for the individuals receiving them, and neonatal quilts to brighten up the wards at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital.  Our annual Spring and Christmas fundraisers help to send our teens on their annual bricks and mortar trips each Summer, or to help with other needs around the church such as new carpet in the Parish Hall.
There are many opportunities for involvement with the Second Saturday Quilts; come and join us at our monthly meetings where members share progress on personal or SSC projects, work together to prepare a quilt for finishing, or simply to visit with each other.  Donations are always welcome to help off-set the expense of supplies and services or bring by your unwanted cotton fabrics to be added to our fabric stash in support of scrap quilt projects.

Children's Social Ministry
Epiphany children and youth will take part in a community service event instead of Sunday School, one Sunday each month in November, March and May.

Help One Child
For the last two years, Epiphany has organized a Help One Child Giving Tree which provided almost 100 holiday gifts to children in foster care.  Our childrens' gifts to Saint Nick were also given to the Help One Child Network last year.

Holiday Food Ingathering
Epiphany has three food Ingatherings a year: Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.  At each Ingathering parishioners bring enough fresh and staple food to feed ten families, five from the Episcopal Mission in East Palo Alto, “El Buen Pastor”, and five families from the combined shelters of “Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse” (CORE).  We rely on parishioners to help deliver food baskets to the five Mission families.  Many make it a family affair.

Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) program brings shelter, meals and support services to families without homes.  Churches of different faiths participate in this program.  The families in the program are housed at Epiphany for a one to two week stay.

There are many ways to get involved – hosting an evening meal for the families, serving as an overnight host, or helping take down the tents on Sunday morning at 8:00 am.
Hosting Dinner – Two or three families will be paired to bring a meal for the IHN families.  The time commitment is from 5:45 PM to 8:30 PM.  We encourage you to bring your children – it is a great experience for them too and teens can earn service hours as well.
Overnight Host – One person (adult only) per evening is needed to make sure the families have everything they need and to oversee that breakfast (provided by Epiphany) is served and cleaned up.  The overnight host typically sleeps in the library on the on the air mattress.  The time commitment is from 8:30 PM to 7:15 AM

Please contact Rebecca Bates reblee42@comcast.net if you have any questions or would like to learn more about IHN.

Jail Ministry
Epiphany parishioners provide holiday cheer to San Mateo County jail inmates and their families at Christmas time.  Under the leadership of Frances Hart, parishioners bake cookies for delivery to jail inmates.  Saint Nicolaus visits the parish each year to collect gifts from our children and other parishioners for jail inmates to give to their children, who might otherwise go without.  Watch the bulletin and Beacon for collection dates and prepare to share the joy of the holidays.

Rebuilding Together
Rebuilding Together Peninsula is a non-denominational organization that builds volunteer partnerships to rehabilitate homes and community facilities of low-income, elderly and/or disabled neighbors so they can live in warmth, safety and independence.  Epiphany participates one time per year, generally in the spring, to support this program.  Your involvement could entail preparation in advance of the effort to on-site improvement effort such as painting, hammering nails, gardening and similar tasks.

Senior Outreach
Participants visit with elderly citizens at the Bay View Villa facility on a regular basis.  At Christmas baked goods are sent to various elder care facilities and participants join with the elderly for an evening of caroling.

Team Epiphany
"Team Epiphany" describes a group of walkers, runners and bicyclists who take part in events during the year to raise money for local community service programs.  Two primary programs are supported: The Human Race in May of each year and The Episcopal Charities Walk-a-thon in October.  Epiphany walkers and runners participate in The Human Race to benefit Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), a program near to the heart of this parish.  The Episcopal Charities Walk-a-thon benefits several Episcopal charities in our diocese and returns a percentage of pledge money to Epiphany for our Outreach programs.  Episcopal Charities also sponsors an annual bike-a-thon.
